No Tax on Tips in Florida: The Full Benefit for Hospitality Workers
Few states have more tipped workers per capita than Florida. Between the restaurants, the hotels, the cruise ports, and the theme parks, tips feed hundreds of thousands of Florida households. And Florida is one of the few states where the no tax on tips headline is completely true, because there is no state income tax to claw anything back.
How it works for Florida workers
The federal deduction covers up to $25,000 of qualified tips per year for 2025 through 2028, claimed on Schedule 1-A on top of the standard deduction. Roughly 70 occupations qualify, including servers, bartenders, hotel housekeepers, valets, tour guides, and rideshare drivers. It phases out above $150,000 of income single or $300,000 married.
A single Florida server earning $60,000 with $15,000 in tips saves about $1,800 a year in federal income tax, and keeps every dollar of it. The same worker in New York gives about $810 back to the state, and in Hawaii over $1,100.
The parts that did not change
Social Security and Medicare still apply to every tipped dollar. Tips still get reported to your employer and still appear on your W-2. Mandatory service charges, like the automatic gratuity on large parties or resort service fees, do not count as tips and get no deduction. Only voluntary tips qualify.
Seasonal and gig workers
Florida runs on seasonal hospitality work, and the deduction handles it fine. There is no minimum work period, the cap is annual, and app-based tips from delivery and rideshare platforms count. The one limit for self-employed workers is that the deduction cannot exceed your net profit for the year.
